Business Owner Profile

Where are you from? How/why did you end up where you are now?

I am from the coast originally moved to Chase BC, in 1994 with my family and started grade 8 there through graduation, then moved out to the North Shuswap worked a few local jobs doing landscaping and maintenance then opened up my own landscaping business Mighty Mouse Landscaping in 2005 to present day.

How have you grown since you first started your business?

I’ve grown in so many ways owning my own business through committed, hard working employees, consistent and new clientele, the ups and downs of thinking quick and problem solving, growing and marketing your business accordingly and ultimately learning about business and also what makes the days better and more enjoyable for everyone.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenges is growing your team and hoping eventually you’ve found employees who take as much pride in this career as I do, also we work outside so mother nature is always a challenge so problem solving is a regular occurrence. Other challenges would have been when first starting out in  Scotch Creek, it  is a  small town and being able to get clients and work was a challenge but word of mouth was my biggest friend and doing a good job, people notice then they talk and then the phone starts ringing and then you build from there and learn more challenges on how to manage all these new jobs and duties etc… it’s a challenge and we are always learning and growing .

What is your favourite part of being a business owner and your job? Why do you do it?

My favourite part of being a business owner is managing, building and getting to create my vision, the job is wonderful, we work in the elements out in North Shuswap where the views and beaches are gorgeous, we get to build, create and dig in the dirt and deal with beauty all day long and that is why I do it, it’s very rewarding and therapeutic in many may ways.

How does living in the North Shuswap impact your business?

It impacts my business because it’s seasonal work, which honestly, I very much enjoy since my kiddos are small, so I’ve learned to embrace that, in other ways in impacts my business in large demands that I can’t always fill but we try our best, it can be overwhelming at times, however I’m so grateful for the amazing business and clientele and feedback we receive.

What makes your business unique and stand out from others in the industry?

I feel we are unique because we focus on being upbeat, we work hard and we are usually an all women team,
who all get along very much and we are creative and we make the visions happen together as a team.

What are your goals for the future of your business?

I would love to have another crew truck and be able to expand a small bit also just always making sure we keep our mission on point and that is to create our clients visions to the best of our abilities.

Would you recommend the North Shuswap to upcoming business owners? If so, why?

Absolutely I think we are a growing town and always welcome in new business owners.

What is a fun fact about you and your business?

A fun fact is the name Mighty Mouse comes from being my nickname as a young kiddo in baseball, I could run really fast around the bases and hit really far so my team nick named me Mighty Mouse and when I stared my business I felt it was appropriate since I am only 5 ft 1 “ and very Mighty lol.

Business Owner Profile

Newscapes Landscaping is operated by Toni and Josef Berger who works alongside each other to design and build amazing landscapes

Where are you from? How/why did you end up where you are now?

I was born and raised in British Columbia and followed several careers to many places in Western Canada. My connection to the beauty and lifestyle of BC is strong, and has always been the plan to enjoy during my later years. The North Shuswap had me hooked over 20 years ago and has been a reluctant but rewarding move to bring business and pleasure together.

How have you grown since you first started your business?

Starting from a golf course background and followed by a large scale commercial company, my trades apprenticeship  completed in 1994. Starting with a wheel barrel, a few small tools and a family loan for a truck, I started my business. A family man and business owner has been both difficult and rewarding, sewing the fabric of who I am today. Discovering that balance in life is the solution that I am enjoying here in Scotch Creek.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge in life was finding a way to be independently wealthy, which meant controlling the balance of money, time, and success.

What is your favourite part of being a business owner and your job? Why do you do it?

I love my work for many reasons. The freedoms and the rewards it gives me keeps me excited to be part of it. Always having control of the outcomes.

How does living in the North Shuswap impact your business?

The North Shuswap is growing in many directions and will attract people and business for many years.

What makes your business unique and stand out from others in the industry?

The landscape company is unique for its ability to connect to every client on a level not always possible with others. It is the highest priority to make our newest clients our best reference to the company.

What are your goals for the future of your business?

The goal for the business is to provide employment and careers to the residents, making the area a choice for future generations to live. Being involved with volunteer groups that give the community strength, enjoyment and protection.

Would you recommend the North Shuswap to upcoming business owners? If so, why?

I would recommend anyone to find a way to live and work in the Shuswap because once you have figured out how to work and play together it will be hard to leave.

What is a fun fact about you and your business?
My love for animals has made it possible to continue to have a business mascot. His name is Clifford and I hope you get to meet him some day!
