Where are you from? How/why did you end up where you are now?

I’m from northern Ontario originally but moved to Calgary in the early eighties with IBM Canada. I met my wife Deb there and we raised three children together. During that time we got into camping and fell in love with BC. After 28 years, we decided to buy a place near the Shuswap Lake and in 2004 purchased our current home in Magna Bay. In 2009, I retired from IBM and we moved here permanently. I love technology and found that there was a need for my skill set in this area so I started Lakeside Technical Solutions.

How have you grown since you first started your business?

My client base has stayed fairly consistent since the beginning which is perfect for me since I am semi-retired. Staying small has allowed for a great work/life balance.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? 

The biggest challenge has been keeping up with technology. I try to stay in tune with advancements and changes through continuous research. Having a technical education and background allows me to understand and quickly adjust as changes occur.

What is your favourite part of being a business owner and your job? Why do you do it?

I love technology and I love helping people to deal with it. Being a business owner allows me to do that and also affords me the flexibility to schedule my time to my own calendar rather than someone else’s.

How does living in the North Shuswap impact your business?

My business started here in the Shuswap so nothing to compare to really. I love it here and the people are great.

What makes your business unique and stand out from others in the industry?

I run my business from my home so I think what makes me unique is that I’m totally mobile and very well equipped. I believe people appreciate that I can come to their home to deal with their problems rather than them having to pack everything up and take it somewhere. The advantage for me is that I can see exactly what their problems are and ask questions as needed. I’m convinced that on-site service is by far the best option in the technology service business.

What are your goals for the future of your business?

My only goal is to continue providing quality service for as long as possible. It benefits the people and businesses in the North Shuswap and that’s been my goal from the beginning.

Would you recommend the North Shuswap to upcoming business owners? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend the North Shuswap for anyone looking to start a new business here. The North Shuswap is growing in population and many of our existing businesses are struggling to keep up with demand. It’s also the perfect place for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and the many recreation activities that we have here.

What is a fun fact about you and your business?

I’m very patient with seniors but I always get them to do whatever it is that I teach them while I’m there several times to make sure they get it. Just like grade school. It’s fun for them and me.
